The bridal trial: what it is actually for

A trial is not there so you can see yourself in bridal makeup. It is there so that the decisions are already made before the morning nobody has time to make them on.

Bring the things that will actually be in the room

• The saree, or at least a photograph of it in daylight. Colour decides more of the palette than the face does.
• The jewellery, particularly anything that sits near the hairline or the ears.
• A photograph of your hair on a normal day — not styled, not on a good day. That is what she is working with.

Photograph it badly on purpose

The trial photographs that matter are not the flattering ones.

• With flash, front-on, in a small room.
• In daylight, near a window, no filter.
• From the back, if there is a braid or a jadai involved.

If it survives a phone flash at arm's length, it will survive the photographer.

Look at it after four hours

The only honest verdict on a finish comes late. Wear the trial through an ordinary afternoon — heat, a meal, a car — and look again. What you are checking:

• Has the base moved, gone patchy, or gone flat?
• Is the eye still where it was?
• Has the hair dropped, and if so, from the root or from the structure?

What a trial cannot tell you

It cannot rehearse the day. On the morning there will be more heat, more people, less time and a great deal more emotion. What the trial buys you is that none of the decisions have to be taken in those conditions — only the execution.

Say what you did not like

This is the whole point of the trial and the part brides skip out of politeness. A look you are quietly unsure about at a trial becomes a look you are quietly unsure about in your wedding photographs for the rest of your life. Say it plainly. It is much easier to change now.
